How To Maintain Healthy Hair In The Winter

As the weather starts to get colder our hair gets affected by the cold and finds it hard to hold on to its natural oils that are produced from our scalp, it’s important that we keep feeding our hair notorious goods to keep our hair looking full of life. In this blog I will be sharing top tips and tricks to help keep your hair looking and feeling amazing.

When washing your hair, we recommend letting it dry naturally in the winter as it is the best thing for it, using straighteners and curling irons damages twice as much when hair is low on nutrition. When at home indoor heating and static electricity both can cause damage to your hair leaving it dry and brittle so we also highly recommend using treatments as part of your weekly routine and leave in conditioner as part of your daily routine.

Eating

Eat the correct balance of the following vitamins and minerals to supply hair with all that it needs to remain shiny, lustrous and strong. Here is a list of good foods to eat to

  • Salmon

Besides being rich in protein and vitamin D (both are key to strong hair) the omega-3 fatty acids found in this tasty cold-water fish are the true superstar. Your body can’t make those fatty acids, which your body needs to grow hair.

  • Walnuts

These are the only type of nut that have a significant amount of omega-3 fatty acids. They’re also rich in biotin and vitamin E, which helps protect your cells from DNA damage. Since your hair rarely gets much shielding from the sun, this is especially great, Too little biotin can lead to hair loss. Walnuts also have copper, a mineral that helps keep your natural hair colour rich and lustrous.

  • Oysters

Oysters are rich in zinc, a lack of which can lead to hair loss (even in your eyelashes), as well as a dry, flaky scalp.

  • Eggs

A great source of protein, eggs are loaded with four key minerals: zinc, selenium, sulfur, and iron. Iron is especially important, because it helps cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles,

Products good for hair in the winter

Here at Michelle Louise, the product we think is best for hair all year round especially in winter is the ‘Elixir Ultime’ range which contains four types of precious oils; Pracaxi, Argan, Camellia and Maize. These four oils all work together to leave hair feeling luxuriously nourished and soft to the touch.

Check the ingredients on hair spray or other products. Make sure they don’t have a high concentration of alcohol which will dry out your hair and make it feel brittle.

Winter hair styles

From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. In fact, even if you live in a moderate climate, experts say you’re still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass. Here are some hair styles we think are best in the winter and still look amazing;

  • Messy bun
  • Pony tails
  • Braids/ plaits

When you tie up your hair, make sure you use an hairtie that doesn’t have a metal clasp on the band. It will cause your hair to get caught in it, and when you take it out it’s most likely going to damage your hair. Another point is that you can add some extra oil to your hair, as it will make it look more sleek and polished.
