The Fringe has returned! What on earth is that? Only the hottest new style coming from Hollywood this season! All the ladies are rocking new fringed ‘dos! A fringe, also commonly known as “bangs”, is most famous on Zooey Deschanel, our favorite quirky sweetheart. In fact, try Googling a picture of her without her signature fringe, and you likely will not even recognize her. Bangs are great for plenty of people of many different face shapes. This year’s lineup of awesome ladies with great fringes include: Miley Cyrus, Amber LeBon, Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry, and Eddie Campbell. Of course, if you ever want true hairspiration, just go check out Queen B’s many different ‘dos. But what sort of face shape do you have and what style of bangs should you get?
Where to start in figuring out your unique face shape? There are many useful tools to figuring this out. There are sites that even allow you to upload a photo of your face and will analyze your face shape foryou. How cool is that? And then of course, you can always just do a quick search on face shapes and compare how yours looks in a mirror with what the results may turn up. The basics are: oval, round, square, heart, triangle, diamond, and oblong.
Once you have figured out your face shape, now you need to figure out what style of bangs will look good on you. As previously mentioned, Zooey Deschanel is well known for her blunt, straight-across bangs. It takes a brave soul to go all out for such a drastic cut. But if you can pull it off, it is well worth it. The straight-across bangs definitely bring attention to your eyes, making them bright and really stand out in your face. Deschanel has a rounded, heart-shaped face. Anyone with a rounded face can easily rock any hairstyle that they please. In addition to Deschanel, Kate Bosworth, Olivia Munn, and Kelly Clarkson have rounded faces. So bust out your best rockstar microphone and go all out with Clarkson’s latest single, Piece by Piece, at your local karaoke bar with all your girlfriends.
For our oval crowd: Julianna Moore, Oprah Winfrey, Anne Hathaway, and Tina Fey, are among Hollywood’s leading ladies who also have oval faces. Let’s pick apart Hathaway because, to be completely honest, she’s my absolute favorite. I have loved her work ever since Princess Diaries; I’m a huge Anne fan. Now, Hathaway has rocked every single hairstyle imaginable. She is almost as versatile as Beyonce (but is anyone really as good as Queen B?) From her frizzy mane in the first Princess Diaries, to her gorgeous long locks in Ella Enchanted, and of course, her freaking great pixie courtesy of Les Miserables, Hathaway has had it all. An oval face is just about as versatile as a rounded face. Let’s be honest here, an oval is really just an elongated circle.
Okay, so if you are fortunate enough to have great genetics and have a more rounded shape face, congratulations! However, for everyone else, how to go about getting a fantastic new haircut? Well let’s focus on our diamond, triangle, and square faced ladies for a little bit here. Rhianna, Mo’Nique, Olivia Wilde, Raven, Lady Gaga, and Lucy Liu all are well-known for their square faces. Let’s look at rockstar Rihanna for a little bit. Rihanna is another megastar who is known for a variety of hairstyles. Rihanna is currently the most successful digital artist of all time, after accruing more than “100 million gold and platinum certificates.” Who wouldn’t want to be Rihanna for fifteen minutes? Rihanna is also not afraid to try out new ‘dos. So if you have a square face, which some might think isn’t quite as versatile as a rounded face, try again. Rihanna has tried everything for you; so just go pick your favorite side-swept bangs, skater-chic pixie, or even her natural, all-out curls, do and get over to your favorite hairstylist to try out a brand new look. She’s even had a faux hawk; seriously, she is awesome.
Continuing our square-faced love,Cosmopolitan recommends that you try to go with longer layers to soften your features a little. But then again, you can also knock out a pixie that has a little more length up top, again with the softening. Shoulder length and off-centered parts are also good ways to help brush out your harder features. A rounded fringe, growing longer as your bangs move away from the center of your face, is another great style for helping to smooth out the angles.
